Cure that chocolate craving in a flash with Chocolate Mug Cake.

Rich chocolate mug cake topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate chips, perfect for quick dessert recipes.

What chocolate cake is so simple to make that you don’t even need a kitchen? Chocolate mug cake! All you need is a few simple ingredients, a fork, a mug, and a microwave. It really is that simple. Mug cakes baked in the microwave hit the internet in 2009, and YouTube and TikTok have since spawned countless variations on this treat.

While there are endless styles of mug cake—for instance, lemon, s’mores, chocolate chip, and cinnamon roll to name a few—chocolate is by far the most popular. There is just something about a warm, chocolatey baked treat that hits right. And the fact that you can go from craving to chowing down in under 10 minutes is amazing!

You will love chocolate mug cake because it is a fast, easy recipe that delivers big chocolate flavor. Minimal effort and equipment yet maximum enjoyment. Chocolate mug cake is for one but can be easily doubled if needed (as long as you have two mugs!). So on the next snow day or late night, it is the perfect treat.

What’s The Science Behind A Mug Cake?

What is the magic that makes a mug cake bake up in less than two minutes, when even a small cake in your regular oven takes so much longer? The science behind it is in the way your microwave transmits heat, directly interacting with the water molecules inside your cake batter. As it heats up quickly from inside to outside (the opposite of how a regular oven cooks), the turntable rotates the mug to ensure even cooking. Then, ding! Your cake is done!

How Do I Store Leftovers?

If you have leftover mug cake, you can cover the mug with plastic wrap, store it at room temperature for up to 24 hours, and reheat gently (at reduced power) in the microwave.

Serving Suggestions

Since time is of the essence when making a chocolate mug cake, you don’t need anything fancy to serve with it. A scoop of Brown Sugar Ice Cream (or even Coffee Ice Cream!) or a dollop of rich Whipped Cream is just right. Or if you’re a peanut butter person, mix a little peanut butter with some powdered sugar and spread it on top. Enjoy your mug cake while it’s warm!
