Cure that cookie craving quickly!

Does this sound familiar? It’s late at night, you’re not exactly hungry but you’re craving something sweet. And chocolate is a must. Checking for chocolate bars or your kids’ leftover Halloween stash from three months ago yields nothing. Maybe the pantry? Even a sad package of store-bought cookies might do it. But again, nothing. It’s not like you’re going to whip up a whole batch of chocolate chip cookies. The solution? Cookie in a mug!
While I’m not a fan of every recipe that has gone viral on TikTok and YouTube (I’m looking at you, yogurt toast), cookie in a mug is an oldie but goodie. As far back as 2009, when YouTube was still a novelty, cookies and cakes microwaved in mugs went viral, and for good reason. You don’t need an oven, you can make a personal treat with just a few ingredients, and they’re delicious!
You will love this cookie in a mug because it is super easy to make, and delivers that warm, chocolatey sweet treat in a matter of minutes. Using basic ingredients and your microwave, you get a warm, comforting (and big!) chocolate chip cookie that you can spoon out bite by bite or release onto a cooling rack and enjoy like a traditional cookie. And if one cookie doesn’t cut it? Make another one—it’s that easy.

Microwave oven wattage
While it’s definitely a boring topic, your microwave oven’s wattage is actually pretty important to know. In the States, microwave ovens are usually between 600 and 1,000 watts. Obviously, the more wattage, the more powerful the oven. Not sure about your microwave? Usually, you can check the little sticker located on the oven itself. If that’s not an option, try using Google Lens or another similar tool. Once you have an idea of the wattage, you can avoid overcooking. For instance, if you have a 1,000-watt microwave, when you make this cookie in a mug, you should definitely check it after 45 seconds instead of the full minute.

How do I store leftovers?
Since cookie in a mug is so fast and easy to make, it’s best enjoyed fresh. For leftovers, you can store the cooled cookie in the fridge, either still in the mug or just in an airtight container. Leftovers will keep for 4-5 days in the fridge.

Serving suggestions
For me, when the craving hits, all I need is a glass of milk and this warm, fresh-from-the-microwave cookie! It’s a delicious, simple treat. However, you can always dress it up a bit if you want a little more. For instance, top it with a dollop of Whipped Cream or Chocolate Whipped Cream, both of which are make-ahead, so you might have them handy. Or, there’s always ice cream! On top of a warm cookie, the ice cream melts just a little and makes for that perfectly cold, creamy contrast with the gooey chocolate chips. Try classic Vanilla Ice Cream or mix it up a little with salted caramel ice cream for that salty-sweet combo.
