Creamy, zesty, and irresistibly smooth, this Avocado Crema is the perfect topping for tacos, grilled meats, or as a dip for crunchy veggies.

Just when you thought guacamole was the perfect way to eat avocados, avocado crema comes along. It’s a wonderfully flavorful avocado-based creation with a silky texture that makes it perfect as a dip, sauce, condiment, or spread.

With its lovely pale green color and velvety mouthfeel, avocado crema is a luxurious topping for all your favorite Mexican and Tex-Mex foods, as well as for some things you might not even think of serving it with (but don’t worry, I’ve got some great ideas for you). The distinctive taste of the avocado mixed into the tangy, rich sour cream is enhanced by tart lime juice, sharp garlic, and the bite of cilantro to produce a balance of flavors that is cool and refreshing as well as bright and zesty.

And it could not be easier to make. All of the ingredients are combined in a blender or food processor. Sure, you might adjust a few things here or there—a bit more lime juice or maybe more salt—but basically, once everything is ready for blending, making avocado crema will take you about five minutes. And who doesn’t have an extra five minutes when the result is total deliciousness?

Tips For The Perfect Avocado Crema

There are so few ingredients in this recipe, so you want to be sure to use perfectly ripe avocado (neither too soft nor too firm), and the freshest limes, garlic, and cilantro leaves. Before cutting your avocado, have all of your ingredients ready to go, including your lime juice already squeezed. (A great trick for getting the maximum amount of juice from a lime is to microwave them for 10-30 seconds before juicing.)

Once everything is assembled, get all of the ingredients into the blender or food processor right away to ensure your avocado doesn’t turn brown. When blending, make sure everything gets combined thoroughly. If the result is too thick, add a bit more lime juice or water. Then taste and adjust seasonings to your liking, and spoon the avocado crema into a container. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap and chill until it’s the perfect temperature for serving.

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Store avocado crema in an airtight container with a piece of plastic wrap pressed down flat against the crema to prevent browning. If it does turn a little brown, just stir it well before serving. Freezing isn’t recommended.

Serving Suggestions

At my house, we eat avocado crema on nearly every Mexican or Tex-Mex dish. It’s perfect on top of Baked Chicken Tacos, a delicious condiment for Carne Asada Nachos, the best topping for Burrito Casserole, and a creamy companion to Vegetarian Tamale Casserole. We also love a dollop of it stirred into a hot bowl of Mexican Chicken Soup or this spicy Chili.

But don’t limit avocado crema to only south-of-the-border fare. It’s also delicious with Crock-Pot Breakfast Casserole, a perfect spread on this Roast Pork Sandwich, and surprisingly delightful with Baked Salmon. You can also use avocado crema as a dip for veggies, and I love it with these Roasted Carrots or Zucchini Chips.
