Looking for a way to celebrate fall flavors with something delicious? Look no further than this delectable Apple Butter Pie.

Not everything has to be pumpkin in the fall! A great alternative for those looking for a little variety is apple. We’re smack in the middle of apple season right now, and I’m taking full advantage of this by making everything from apple pie to apple cider. One ingredient I have on hand year-round, however, is apple butter. While some love their morning toast with jam, this creamy apple spread has always been my topping of choice. And recently, while I was having breakfast on one of those gloomy days that call for baking something delicious, I came up with this recipe.

If you love pumpkin pie, don’t be afraid to give this one a go. Not only is it a welcome change (or perfect alongside this classic), but from the very first bite, you might just decide it’s your favorite. I wouldn’t blame you! Between the silky smooth texture and the warmth of cinnamon and nutmeg, this is a treat that you’ll be happy to make for everything from holiday dinners to potlucks. As for me, I love a slice on a chilly afternoon with a cup of apple tea. It doesn’t get more seasonal than that!

All about apple butter

If you’re wondering why I’m obsessed with apple butter, let me explain. This rich, amber-colored, delight is made by slow-cooking apples with aromatic spices. The result is a velvety spread full of concentrated apple flavor that can be used in myriad ways. Besides toast, I’ll often stir a good dollop into my cinnamon-raisin oatmeal or plain yogurt. It makes a great topping for other breakfast foods such as pancakes and waffles. I also love apple butter instead of jelly on a peanut butter sandwich, and you’d be surprised how amazing it is on a turkey sandwich with rye bread and cheddar cheese. Speaking of cheese, if you’re serving a cheese board, apple butter happens to be an excellent condiment. Its slightly tangy, sweet notes balance the lactic creaminess of cheese beautifully. Last but not least, don’t be afraid to use it in savory recipes. Personally, I love it in a vinaigrette with Dijon mustard and walnut vinegar!

How do I store leftovers?

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. The pie can also be frozen, sliced or whole. Double-wrap it in plastic wrap and transfer it to a freezer-safe container. It will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge.

Serving suggestions

The best way to eat any pie is with a scoop of ice cream, and this one is no exception. Vanilla Ice Cream is the classic choice, but I also love the rich sweetness of Brown Sugar Ice Cream or this decadent No-Churn Salted Cinnamon Ice Cream. Top it off with a bit of Homemade Whipped Cream, if ice cream is not your thing.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 cups apple butter
  • 12 ounces evaporated milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • Whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions
 

  • In a mixing bowl, use a whisk to mix the apple butter, evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.

  • Pour the filling into the unbaked pie crust.

  • Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F for 15 minutes. Then, lower the heat to 350°F and bake for an additional 40 minutes, or until the center is set. If you insert a knife into the center, it should come out clean.

  • Allow the pie to cool completely on a wire rack before slicing. Serve each slice with whipped cream, if desired.
