Ingredients
  

  • 2.75 pounds baking apples peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch slices
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 pinches nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon divided
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter room temperature, cubed

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  • In a large mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with cornstarch, brown sugar, lemon juice, nutmeg and 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon until well coated.

  • Spread the apple mixture in an even layer in an 8-inch square baking dish.

  • In a separate medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and the salt.

  • Add the cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry blender or two forks to blend until the mixture forms small crumbles.
  • Sprinkle the crumbly topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
