A soft and cakey milk chocolate chip cookie that is a great recipe for getting kids in the kitchen.

I think that kids need to learn how to cook. It is a life skill that will they have forever, teaches them to appreciate food and make better food choices. While chocolate chip cookies are not necessarily a healthy food, they are a perfect recipe to use to teach your child basic cooking and baking skills. Reading a recipe, measuring, how to use the oven, timing, how to tell when something is done, and even cleaning up. Chocolate chip cookies are delicious and exciting enough that kids will want to get in the kitchen and make them.

Will and I used a favorite recipe, Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies from Kelsey Nixon’s book Kitchen Confidence. These chocolate chip cookies are cakey on the inside and crisp on the edges, my favorite cookie texture ever. If milk chocolate isn’t your thing, you could use semi-sweet or dark.

While William is learning to cook, I’m learning to shoot videos. It is so much fun, but there is for sure a learning curve. It’s easy to not want to shoot any because it isn’t great yet, but it will never be great unless I shoot. So in the meantime, I’m having fun making little videos of the kids. I’m not sure if they love being in them, but they like watching them afterward. This was shot in real time so I spent my time trying to get Will to slow down so that I could get each step.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips

This recipe makes about 2 dozen, I normally double it because they go quickly. We gave away more than half to Will’s running group and the rest were gone in an afternoon.
