A Philly cheesesteak is one of those foods that reminds you how sometimes the simplest ingredients, when combined just right, can create something delicious every time you make it. You probably remember where you were when you had your first (or best) cheesesteak. But imagine combining these beloved flavors on a pizza. You’ve just created one mouthwatering creation that is sure to become a fast favorite for dinners or get-togethers.

This Philly cheesesteak pizza is a blend of wonderfully indulgent flavors, featuring tender slices of beef, sautéed onions and peppers, and a generous layer of melted cheese, all piled on a crispy pizza crust. It’s a dish that features the hometown essence of a classic Philly cheesesteak with the universal appeal of pizza. The result is a hearty, savory pie that’s perfect for fun game nights, casual weeknight dinners, or whenever you’re craving something comforting, satisfying, and oh-so-delicious!

The secret to this pizza lies in the careful layering of its flavors. Start with your favorite crust, which provides the perfect foundation for the toppings. The tender, thinly sliced beef is paired with caramelized onions and bell peppers, bringing in a slightly sweet flavor you won’t be able to get enough of. The final flavor layer is the gooey cheese, which is really the star of the show, holding all the deliciousness together. A drizzle of garlic butter, hot sauce, or a sprinkle of Italian seasoning can be added for an extra boost of flavor, making every bite a delicious experience.

Customize Your Cheesesteak…

One of the best things about this Philly cheesesteak pizza is how easy it is to customize. Whether you prefer a thicker crust or a different cheese blend or even want to add more toppings, this recipe is versatile enough to accommodate your tastes. You can start by experimenting with the type of crust you use. A homemade dough is great, but store-bought is just fine, too! For the cheeses, mozzarella or provolone both taste great with the sliced steak, and you can even use a mix of these two together. Other cheese options that work well are cheddar and American, depending on your preference or what you have on hand. As for toppings, you can consider adding sliced mushrooms for an earthy flavor that always pairs well with meat and cheese. Or, use lettuce and tomatoes for a fresh, crunchy contrast. If you’re interested in some added spice or heat, you can top it with sliced jalapeños and banana peppers or drizzle some hot sauce on top. Play around; find your favorite cheesesteak combo and run with it!

FAQs & Tips

How to Make Ahead and Store

To store your leftover pizza, allow it to cool before wrapping it in aluminum foil or placing it in an airtight container. Store the pizza in the fridge for 3-4 days or freezer for up to 3 months. For freezing, wrap the pizza well in plastic wrap and then in foil, or wrap individual slices in plastic before transferring them to a freezer-safe bag. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Can This Be Made Gluten or Dairy-Free?

Yes, it can, with the right substitutions for some ingredients. You can substitute the pizza dough for your favorite gluten-free option, and just make sure that any sauces you use are certified gluten-free on the label, too. As for making the recipe dairy-free, you can use any plant-based cheese alternatives that you enjoy in place of the regular cheese.

Can I Use Other Meat Options?

Although a Philly cheesesteak is traditionally made with sliced steak, you can absolutely choose other meats for your pizza. Grilled chicken slices are a great substitute that will still maintain the essence of the cheesesteak flavors. If you’d like to omit meat altogether, adding sliced mushrooms as a topping will help keep the dish hearty and filling.
