Delicious Rice Krispies treats, elevated—add Oreos for the upgrade!

Rice Krispies treats, those nostalgic treats from your childhood, countless classroom parties, and packed lunches, are delicious. No question. However, standard Rice Krispies treats are simple, and that means it’s fun to add a mix-in. Coarsely chopped Oreos add flavor and texture, upgrading Rice Krispies from good to great. The cookies and cream flavor, and the crunch from the Oreo pieces, bring this classic dessert to a whole new level.
Rice Krispies treats have been around for a long time. First introduced as a recipe on the side of the cereal box in the 1940s, home cooks have been whipping up this no-bake treat for decades. In the 1990s, Kellogg’s started selling pre-made Rice Krispies treats in the recognizable blue foil packaging. However, nothing beats homemade: the perfect gooey-to-crispy ratio of marshmallows and rice cereal makes for an irresistible treat. While other mix-ins like sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, and candies work, chopped Oreos add a decadent element and are by far my favorite variation.
You will love Oreo Rice Krispies treats too, as it’s a no-bake recipe that turns out a potluck- or party-worthy dessert (or just a treat for yourself when you get a hankering for it!). If you have little ones, get them into the kitchen to help with this recipe. They can help measure the Rice Krispies and the marshmallows and chop the Oreos (more on that below). Of course, don’t be mad if they sneak a taste of the cookies or marshmallows—we’ve all done it! Oreo Rice Krispies treats are a tasty variation on a classic and may just become your favorite way to enjoy them.

The best way to coarsely chop Oreos
When you need coarsely chopped Oreo cookies, the best method doesn’t even involve a knife! All you need is a gallon-sized resealable bag (freezer-type if you have it, as they are thicker than the standard bags) and a rolling pin. Place the Oreos into the bag, squeeze out as much air as possible, and seal tightly. Holding the rolling pin at one end, start gently tapping the bag of cookies with the other end of the rolling pin. Start gently and increase the intensity, flipping the bag over as needed. Your goal in this recipe is large chunks, not a powder. That’s it!

How do I store leftovers?
Oreo Rice Krispies treats keep very well when stored properly. To store them for up to 4 days, put them into a resealable bag or other airtight container and leave them at room temperature (putting them in the fridge will cause them to harden too much). For longer storage, you can freeze them. Pack the treats layered with parchment paper in between and freeze for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to serve, let them sit out on the counter for about 30 minutes to thaw, and enjoy.

Serving suggestions
When cutting Oreo Rice Krispies treats, keep a damp paper towel handy to wipe off the knife blade so it glides smoothly through the pan and cuts neat edges. Stacked on a plate or dessert platter, these goodies will not last long. They are great on their own or paired with other sweet treats. Choices that work well include Rainbow Rice Krispies Treats, Marshmallow Pretzel Bars, or Rocky Road Bars.
