These cherry almond smoothies taste like dessert in a glass and make for an easy breakfast on the go. Lots of cinnamon and honey make this a delicious dessert, too!

I am moving a little slow on this Monday morning. We had a great but very busy weekend, and it went by too quickly. After I send everyone off to work and school, I love getting organized for the rest of the week. I clean up the house, make a grocery list, check the calendar, and start prepping for the week ahead.

Part of the routine is to make smoothies for the freezer. Cherries are in season right now, and I love the combination of cherries and almonds together. Taking inspiration from my favorite cherry cobbler, I added lots of cinnamon and honey for a little sweetness. If you are making pies, cobblers, or crisps with cherries and have some extra, throw them in the freezer for your morning smoothie. And, if your cherries are frozen, you can use them in place of ice.

Why You’re Going to Love This Smoothie

  • This smoothie is a great way to use up any leftover cherries if you’re making a pie, cobbler, or crisp.
  • Nothing’s better than a breakfast or snack that tastes just like dessert, but with healthy ingredients.
  • An easy make-ahead recipe you can prepare the night before, or blend together quickly the morning of.
  • Full of nutritious ingredients that’ll keep you going all day long.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup vanilla almond coconut milk
  • 1 cup cherries (fresh or frozen)
  • 3 tablespoons raw almonds
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 4 ice cubes (if using fresh cherries)

Variations

Smoothies are intended to be altered. You can easily substitute or add ingredients into this cherry almond smoothie. Below are a few ideas:

  • Chocolate: If you want a sweeter treat or have a hankering for some Cherry Garcia ice cream, adding a few chunks of dark or semi-sweet chocolate can take this smoothie to the next level.
  • Blueberries: Cherry and almond flavors pair deliciously, but you can try swapping out the cherries with blueberries for a unique twist. Think more of a blueberry pie than a cherry cobbler.
  • Hazelnuts: If you don’t have any almonds on hand, I think hazelnuts are the next best thing. Sweet and nutty, they would be amazing in this smoothie.
  • Other milk alternatives: The flavored almond milk isn’t essential in this cherry almond smoothie, but it does elevate the flavors. If you can’t find this kind (I used Almond Breeze), any other milk alternative will work well, too. Coconut, oat, or soy milk would be delicious.

Serving Suggestions

I devour this cherry almond smoothie pretty quickly. The healthy fats, protein, fiber, and vitamins make this a great breakfast, which would pair well with cinnamon bun pancakes or a simple plate of bacon and eggs.

I also highly recommend this smoothie as a lower calorie option for dessert. It can be delicious with baked goods as well, like my cherry buckle cake. What could be better?

FAQs

Is the coconut oil essential in this recipe?

It isn’t, but it adds a delicious flavor and is full of healthy fats. I add it for the health benefits but you can leave this ingredient out if you’d like.

What does this cherry almond smoothie taste like?

Creamy, sweet, and just plain cozy. When I say I took inspiration from my cherry cobbler, I wasn’t kidding. It tastes like dessert in a glass!

Is this smoothie healthy?

It depends on how you define healthy. I would say yes, because it’s a great source of healthy fats, antioxidants, fiber, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins C, A, and K. The almond milk means it’s dairy free, which is great if you can’t tolerate lactose. It also keeps you full, so if you’re indulging in this cherry almond smoothie for breakfast, you won’t be tempted to snack until lunch.

How to Store Delicious Cherry Almond Smoothies

This is a great recipe for making ahead of time when you have a busy morning planned. I like to either blend up this cherry almond smoothie the night before and leave it in the fridge (for up to 24 hours) so I can grab it and go the next day. Just give it a nice stir first.

You can also freeze this smoothie for up to 3 months. Seal it in individual containers and defrost your smoothie in the fridge overnight and it’ll be ready to drink by morning!
