Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1 stick, softened to room temperature
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened to room temperature (use brick-style for best results)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt to balance the sweetness
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted

Instructions

  • Place the softened butter and cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. If you don't have a stand mixer, a hand mixer will work just fine. Beat the mixture on medium speed until it's creamy and free of lumps (about 2-3 minutes).

  • Reduce the mixer speed to low and add in the vanilla extract and salt. Mix until just combined.
Butter being poured into a bowl of whipped cream or frosting.
  • Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, about a half cup at a time, with the mixer still on low (to prevent a sugar storm). Once all the sugar is added, increase the speed to medium and beat until the frosting is light (about 1-2 minutes).

  • Your cream cheese frosting is now ready. Your cakes or cupcakes should be cool before spreading or piping the frosting on.
