Want a cheesy, herby side for your next meal? Try this easy Pizza Hut Breadsticks Recipe.
While it may be true that “no one outpizzas the hut,” I have to say it may also be true that no one out-breadsticks the hut, either (sorry, Olive Garden, though we do love yours, too). Pizza Hut breadsticks are crispy on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside, the perfect size and shape for dipping, and bursting with buttery, herby, cheesy goodness.
In 1958, brothers Dan and Frank Carney borrowed $600 from their mother to open a pizza restaurant in Wichita, Kansas. The sign for their new place only had room for eight letters, and that’s why they named it Pizza Hut. The pizza was good, and customers raved about the service, so it’s no wonder that this establishment grew into the powerhouse it still is today. As Pizza Hut grew, so did its menu, and one of the most popular items is its breadsticks.
Now you can make them at home, and it couldn’t be easier because our recipe calls for store-bought pizza dough that you press into a baking sheet, brush with melted butter, score into breadsticks, and bake. As soon as they come out of the oven, you brush them with a mix of melted butter, herbs, seasonings, and Parmesan cheese. So good and maybe even better than the original!
Pizza Hut breadsticks were made for dipping. Here’s a recipe for How to Make Tomato Sauce, but we think you’ll also love to dip them into Homemade Basil Pesto or spicy, tangy Ranchero Sauce.
Tips for perfect Pizza Hut breadsticks
When working with store-bought pizza dough, it’s a good idea to let it rest on your counter for at least an hour (and up to three): this will allow the gluten to release and make it easier for you to stretch the dough into the baking pan. But make sure you’ve buttered the baking sheet before pressing the dough into it because that’s how you achieve that irresistible crunchy bottom. Once the dough is in the pan, generously brush the top with more melted butter. I think you’ve figured out by now that the key to these delicious breadsticks is butter. Take your time blending the Parmesan and seasonings so everything is fully incorporated together. As soon as your breadsticks come out of the oven, brush them with (more!) melted butter and then sprinkle the seasoning mix evenly on top so that every bite is full of flavor.
And speaking about seasonings, feel free to adjust the recipe and add whatever you like or have on hand. Earthy rosemary, for example, is a great option.
How do I store leftovers?
Wrap the cooled Pizza Hut breadsticks in foil or place them in an airtight container, and they can last at room temperature for 1-2 days, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, and in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Serving suggestions
Breadsticks are one of the best accompaniments to soup. When it comes to Pizza Hut breadsticks, we have a few favorites, starting with Easy Pizza Soup. But, really, any great Italian soup, like Minestrone, rustic Pasta E Fagioli, or Sausage Tortellini Soup, is made even more delicious with the addition of crispy, chewy, cheesy Pizza Hut breadsticks. And don’t forget a salad to complete the meal. Caesar Salad, Spinach Salad, or this simple but vibrant Green Salad all work. But you don’t have to confine your Pizza Hut breadstick eating to Italian cuisine. Try serving them alongside anything that craves a carb and offers dipping possibilities, like Chili, Coq Au Vin, or Shrimp Creole.
