Enjoy this M&M cookie recipe for the perfect sweet treat that’s fun for the whole family!

Colorful sugar cookies with M&M's on cooling rack and glass of milk.

I’m always in need of cookies in my house. Having a small dessert that can be stored away and quickly taken out after a meal is such a help. Especially when I’m always running around doing everything throughout the day, and don’t want to make anything big or fancy. There’s nothing better than seeing my family’s faces light up when they get to stick a hand into the cookie jar and grab an easy treat.

When I was making M&M cookies for the first time, what really struck me was just how joyful they look. Of course, any cookie is joyful, because cookies are sweet, joyful treats, but an M&M cookie really brings it home because they are just popping with color.

You’re going to love this recipe because it is basically foolproof. It’s a great go-to recipe with universal appeal for anyone who likes cookies. They’ll bake into a soft and chewy masterpiece that has just the right amount of crisp along the edges. The only problem you’ll run into is that you’ll never make enough!

M&M: Candy Perfection

What’s cool about using M&Ms in a cookie rather than a different treat, like traditional chocolate chips, is that they don’t melt into goop as easily. Goopy chocolate chips can be great if that’s what you’re going for! But the hard shells of an M&M keep it all contained, making for delicious bursts of candy-coated chocolate in every bite. And remember, M&Ms come in all manner of different color combinations, from patriotic red, white and blue, to Christmassy green and red, so feel free to play around with them, too.

FAQs & Tips

How Do I Store Leftovers?

You can store these M&M cookies in an airtight container for about 3 to 5 days if you leave them on a counter or in a pantry. If you’d like to make your cookies last longer than 3-5 days, you can put them in your freezer in an airtight container for 3 months. Just be sure to let them thaw out before eating or serving them!

Avoid Clumpy Candy

Mix in the M&Ms by hand. It’s okay to get a little sticky when you’re baking cookies! Doing this step by hand will help ensure that the M&Ms are evenly distributed through the dough rather than clumping more in one spot than others, or leaving some spots completely devoid of candy.

The Best Butters To Use

Do not use margarine as a substitute. Butter is always better! For this specific recipe, we’re using unsalted butter, but if you want to really get fancy, try using Irish butter instead of the regular store brands! It has a higher content of butterfat, which makes for a richer and sweeter taste.

Serving Suggestions

If you’ve got a party planned, a spread of cookies will always make your guests happy! Serve these M&M cookies next to an assortment of other cookies and treats. Some good choices are Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Snickerdoodles, Reese’s Cheesecake Bars, and even something zesty like Key Lime Cookies!
